Best materials to wear on those extra hot days
Six cooling materials to wear
When it’s hot outside the clothes you wear can make a big difference to your comfort levels. Instead of just throwing anything on and hoping for the best, consider what materials your clothes are made from and if that’s actually a good choice for the hot weather.
Breathable fabrics made from natural fibres will adjust to your body temperature and help to keep you cool in the heat. You want to stay away from fabrics that will just absorb your sweat and instead opt for light, moisture-wicking fibres to keep you cool and dry.
Cotton
Cotton is a well-known material that you probably have already in your wardrobe. It’s known for its top-notch comfort levels, so it comes as no surprise that it’s great to wear when it’s hot. Cotton is a great airing fabric that acts as a ventilator for your body, while also being great for absorbing any moisture. Wearing something made from cotton will leave you cool, dry, and ready to face the heat.
Chambray
Chambray is cotton's lesser known sister fabric. It’s similar to cotton, except that its threads are woven together differently. The appearance of chambray resembles denim, which gives you the opportunity to achieve the same look without having to deal with the dense thickness that you would get from something made out of denim.
Linen
Linen is a natural fibre made from the stalk of a flax plant, and was actually manufactured to help combat hot and sweaty days. The material is light and flowy, giving you maximum breathability and comfort to leave you feeling cool and fresh even on the hottest days.
Rayon
This fabric is a man-made fibre created from cellulose in trees which is then manipulated to create a texture not too dissimilar from cotton or silk. While it feels similar, rayon allows for an even lighter feel than these well-known fabrics. It’s a slightly thinner thread than cotton that makes it that bit more lightweight, allowing you to keep your body cool on those hot days. However, when it comes to sweat-absorption, cotton is the winner out of these two.
Silk
Nothing quite compares to wearing silk on a hot summer day. Silk is a natural protein fibre that’s produced by silkworms and has been popular around the world throughout history. It’s known for its shine, strength, and durability as the material keeps you feeling cool and airy rather than sticking to your body like some synthetic materials are known to do.
Seersucker
Seersucker is a pleasant material to wear on a hot day. It is a type of cotton fabric that’s made with special weaving to give the fabric a puckered surface. This allows some extra airflow which makes it particularly good to wear during the summer months.
